FOR IMMEDIATE RELASE
AVA’s 90th Anniversary Season Continues With Classic Mozart Comedy
PHILADELPHIA – Jan. 16, 2025 – The Academy of Vocal Arts (AVA) proudly presents Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s operatic comedy Così fan tutte, opening February 22 and running through March 1. Resident assistant conductor Robert Kahn conducts the AVA Orchestra, and stage director José Maria Condemi makes his AVA debut.
Così fan tutte, composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) with libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte is famous for its sparkling score and risqué plot. The opera tells the story of two soon-to-be-wed couples as they navigate the challenges of trust and desire. The plot thickens when a mischievous philosopher decides to meddle in the couples’ lives through a series of humorous twists designed to test their fidelity.
Resident scenic designer Cameron Anderson provides a vibrant and playful landscape full of surprises fully supporting stage director José Maria Condemi’s creative vision. “Così fan tutte is a brilliant exploration of love, trust, and human nature wrapped in Mozart’s unmatched musical genius,” states Condemi. “This opera is rightfully a classic because it is both timeless and deeply relatable, which is why it continues to captivate audiences around the world. At the Academy of Vocal Arts, I was given the privilege of helping to bring this masterpiece to life with AVA’s roster of extraordinary vocalists. My goal as the director is to bring out and showcase the charm, magic, and wit of this brilliant work, and I am looking forward to seeing how the audience reacts to our production. Così fan tutte is a perennial favorite for audiences to experience, and it’s one of my favorites to direct.”
“Mozart’s Così fan tutte is not only one of the greatest operas ever written but also one of humanity’s crowning artistic achievements,” opines conductor Robert Kahn. “Audiences attending this opera are sure to laugh a great deal and experience Mozart writing his most heartfelt and emotionally profound music. I’m incredibly thrilled to share this extraordinary opera with our AVA community.”
3rd-Year Resident Artist Alla Yarosh, performing the role of Dorabella, remarks, “There’s something truly unique and special about performing a Mozart opera. The voices are exquisitely written, and the score allows me to explore the power of my instrument. I love that we’re performing such a beloved operatic comedy. Mozart was famous for his sense of humor, and that sense of playfulness shines through in this opera.”
The creative team is bursting with excitement. Join us in Naples at the start of the 20th century as our 90th Anniversary continues with a Così fan tutte production unlike any other.
