The Academy of Vocal Arts is proud to congratulate first-year tenor Matthew Sink on winning 2nd Place at the 46th Annual Opera Birmingham Vocal Competition with masterful performances of Puccini’s “Nessun dorma” and Wagner’s “Mein lieber Schwann.”
Held in Birmingham, Alabama, the Opera Birmingham Vocal Competition is a nationally recognized event that showcases some of the most promising emerging opera singers in the country. Finalists perform before an esteemed panel of judges and a live audience, competing for cash prizes and professional recognition. Matthew’s 2nd Place finish marks a significant accomplishment early in his residency at AVA.
Originally from Las Vegas, Nevada, Matthew Sink joined the Academy of Vocal Arts this season as a first-year Resident Artist. He previously earned his Master of Music degree from Northwestern University and his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Since arriving at AVA, he has already demonstrated notable artistry and versatility, appearing as Flamand in Capriccio and Don Curzio in Le nozze di Figaro.
The Opera Birmingham Vocal Competition has a longstanding reputation for identifying exceptional young talent, with many past winners and finalists going on to successful national and international careers. Matthew’s success in this distinguished competition reflects both his individual dedication and the high level of training provided at the Academy of Vocal Arts.
