Recital: The Music of Lili Boulanger

Marie-Juliette Olga (“Lili”) Boulanger was a Parisian-born child prodigy, sister to noted composer Nadia Boulanger. In 1913 at the age of 19 she became the first woman to win the Prix di Rome composition prize for her cantata Faust et Hélène, The text was written by Eugene Adenis (1854-1923) based on Goethe’s Faust (performed at AVA in 2015).
Her life and work were troubled by chronic illness that cut her life short at the early age of 24 and she was buried in the Cimetière de Montmartre where her sister was also interred in 1979.
The program features both Faust et Hélène and a cycle of 13 songs called “clairière dans le ciel” or “clearing in the sky” performed by AVA’s award-winning Resident Artists.
