Presenting a special double bill for two of the three operas of Puccini’s famous collection, Il trittico, which has been standard in operatic repertoire since premiering in 1918 at The Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

In the dark and gripping thriller Il tabarro, jealousy, betrayal, and forbidden love simmer beneath the surface of life aboard a working barge on the Seine. As night falls over Paris, the strained marriage of Michele and Giorgetta is tested by loneliness, resentment, and unspoken desires. When Giorgetta begins a secret affair with the young stevedore Luigi, hidden passions and mounting suspicions set the stage for a dangerous confrontation. Originally conceived as the opening work of Puccini’s Il trittico, Il tabarro premiered in 1918 and remains one of the composer’s most atmospheric and dramatically powerful creations.

In Gianni Schicchi, when the wealthy Buoso Donati dies, his outraged relatives discover that he has left his fortune not to them, but to a monastery. Desperate to reclaim their inheritance, the squabbling family turns to the resourceful and sharp-tongued Gianni Schicchi, who devises an audacious plan to outwit the authorities and rewrite the will. What follows is a whirlwind of disguises, clever schemes, and increasingly absurd complications. Premiering in 1918 as the final installment of Puccini’s Il trittico, Gianni Schicchi remains one of opera’s most beloved comedies.

Sung in Italian with English supertitles.
