THIS JANUARY AND FEBRUARY: AVA PRESENTS Dvořák’s Rusalka

First time ever at AVA – not to be missed! Four performances only.
Generously sponsored by Walter and Alice Strine, Esqs.

PHILADELPHIA, PA (JANUARY 3, 2019) – The Academy of Vocal Arts begins 2019 with a production of Czech composer Antonín Dvořák’s Rusalka for the first time ever in the academy’s 84-year history. The opera tells the tale of the water-nymph Rusalka, who will do whatever it takes to be with the human she has fallen in love with. Rusalka features one of the most popular arias in all of opera, the beloved “Song to the Moon”. The cast may be viewed here.

AVA’s production is fully staged with piano accompaniment, and is sung in Czech with English super titles. AVA Master Vocal Coach Luke Housner is the music director and pianist, and Kevin McDowell directs. Of the opera, Luke Housner says, “Dvorak’s Rusalka offers the Resident Artists of the Academy of Vocal Arts the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the Czech language, culture and folklore. The opera’s timeless themes, which grapple with the struggle and complex relationship between man and nature, resonant strongly in today’s environment.”
