Conductor: Christofer Macatsoris
Director: Tara Faircloth (AVA debut)
Benjamin Britten’s controversial and bold chamber opera returns to the AVA stage for the first time since the 1997-98 Season. Britten’s retelling of the rape of the noblewoman Lucretia by Sextus Tarquinius is framed by the Male and Female Chorus describing the historical events and their viewpoint of the tragedy from a later era. Despite its small forces—employing only eight singers in its cast and an orchestra of thirteen players—The Rape of Lucretia has stunned audiences around the world with its evocative music since its premiere at Glydebourne in 1946.
February 17, 20, 22, & 24, 2024 – All performances at AVA’s Helen Corning Warden Theater at 7:30 PM.
