Kim Welborn

Resident Costume Designer

Kim Welborn is a Third Culture Kid, an American who lived in 6 other countries before she turned 15. Living in that variety of cultures she saw a full array of history, ethnicity, and art: Bedouins with indigo tattoos, Moroccan women with henna hands and Thai monks in saffron robes. She learned style in Paris and Beirut; folklore and clothing history in Madrid; textiles and dye in Khenifra and Teheran; and construction and tailoring in Bangkok.

In 2004 Kim turned to her passion for costuming and has since designed more than 80 professional mainstage productions, from historical events to dance, musical theatre, and opera. Her shows have been set from the Middle Ages to a Klingon Warship and ranged from period-perfect to Steampunk and a recycled fantasy.

Kim brings directors’ visions to life within deadlines and on budget, without compromising production quality. Her multi-cultural perspective has a distinct impact on her costume designs, expressed in texture, color and detail. Working with a fantastically diverse range of artists and productions has proven her excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Let’s create something wonderful!
