The Academy of Vocal Arts celebrates another exciting milestone for 1st-year soprano Anna Thompson, who has been named a national semifinalist in the prestigious Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition. Thompson competed in the National Semifinals on March 15, 2026, continuing an impressive run of success in one of the opera world’s most important young artist competitions.
Thompson advanced to the national stage after distinguishing herself in earlier rounds, earning recognition among a select group of semifinalists invited to compete at the Metropolitan Opera. From hundreds of applicants nationwide, only a small number of singers reach this level, marking a significant achievement early in her professional development.
A native of Rochester, Michigan, Thompson is currently in her first year of study at AVA, where she continues to refine her artistry through the school’s rigorous, performance-based training program. Her recent accomplishments, including top prizes in national competitions, underscore her growing presence as a young artist to watch.
Finalists from the semifinal round will advance to the Grand Finals Concert, Saturday, March 21, where they will perform on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera before an audience of industry leaders and distinguished judges. Thompson’s advancement to the national semifinals highlights both her individual artistry and AVA’s ongoing commitment to training the next generation of operatic talent.
