Five Resident Artists of the Academy of Vocal Arts (AVA) have been named winners of the Philadelphia and Maryland Districts of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, showcasing the exceptional level of talent cultivated within AVA’s program.
Three AVA Resident Artists earned top honors in the Philadelphia District competition: Katherine Dobbs (2nd-year mezzo-soprano), Anna Thompson (1st-year soprano), and Alla Yarosh (4th-year mezzo-soprano). Their performances impressed judges with their artistry and technique, continuing AVA’s strong tradition of success in this prestigious national competition.
Two AVA Resident Artists were recognized in the Maryland District: Joshua Berg (3rd -year tenor) and Julianna Smith (2nd-year mezzo-soprano). Their achievements reflect the depth of talent across AVA’s current roster and highlight AVA’s continued presence on the national stage.
The Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition is one of the most respected vocal competitions in the country, designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their careers. District winners advance to the regional rounds, with the potential to compete at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
